The only reason I choose this poem as a topic for my first paper is that in my point of view, I have a lot of common points with Flick. I really loved this poem and I will try to explain to you why, in this paper. John Updike’s poem “Ex-basketball player” suggests that whatever the feelings are, happiness or sadness, both the man and the town he lives in, become dependants on each other for reaffirmation of the past. The poem is built around the character Flick Webb, who was a famous highschool basketball player. But now, he is confronted to the monotony of pumping gas in the small town where he was born.
Dr. Forrest “Phog” Allen “Beware of the Phog” this phrase is commonly seen throughout the University of Kansas, especially on the days of home basketball games prominently in Allen Field House. The phrase was established when the new field house was built and named after one of the most influential coaches of KU basketball history, Dr. Forrest “Phog” Allen. Allen was not only influential then as a coach and a leader of the community, but also today he influences the lives of students at the University of Kansas. Allen is known by most as a basketball coach who learned about the game straight from the creator himself. He started as a player with James Naismith Who taught him how to play and Naismith told him: “Forrest, you don’t coach
He also practiced all day to get better. Johnson came from an athletic family his father used to play basketball while he was in high school and he learned from his father and his mother used to play basketball when she was young and he watched his older brothers play basketball. By the time he was in eighth grade, Earvin Johnson began to think about his future as a basketball player. He had become a dominant play in his junior high player in his team. He had scored 48 points in a game.
In college basketball, alley oops, fancy no-look passes, and trash talking, these are just some of the things we are accustomed to in the game of basketball today. Before 1992 though, it was all about making the simple plays just to get the ball in the hoop. Also, the custom attire for this generation of basketball is long shorts that go to your knees and generally most people wear high black socks. Before 1992, most people wore short shorts and high white socks instead of black socks. What caused these changes to take place in 1992 you may ask?
Before the NBA players had to wear suits before a game and the NBA enforced the rule that you had to do a year in college before you got drafted, the athletes of high school and college were getting a free ride. Teachers looked past their academic ability and let them slide because of their athletic ability. This is the same thing in Malik case until he meets is political science teacher, played by Laurence fishbone, Professor Phipps and Fudge. Even though, they have different views of the world, fudge and the professor teach Malik about being a black athlete and a black student, in different ways. Fudge, although he has been there for six years and is considered a professional student(MSN Movies
If you do not believe this, you simply teach youngsters that cheating can be justified if someone else is cheating too. I know I’m not supposed to use “I” but over the summer I worked at a basketball facility that runs some of the Nations top showcases for high school athletes. I got the chance to talk to a number of college coaches and ask them questions about their profession, which hopefully one day I will be in. When I asked about being ethical they never said much, yea I got a few funny stories but almost every coach told me “if you have a big decision, think about what you going to do and sleep on it, if you wake up with a good feeling then roll with
In the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Junior gets to experience this, after a basketball game against his former best friend and people that he lives around every day. In this piece, we learn that things are not always as they seem. I think this is shown through the character’s actions, the internal and external dialogue, and through what we know historically about the Native Americans and through Junior. To begin with, I will show that the character of Junior changes to show that things are not always as they seem. At first, Junior is determined to “demoralize” the “evil Wellpinit Redskins.” He continually describes them as the enemy, and in some respects thinks of with as little consideration as others.

During these practices, I would often hear senior, Sammie Bane, say, “Oh my gosh, why are we still doing these same drills over and over again?” In response to that, Coach Rieckers would reply, “Do you want to go to state and earn respect from the community?” Growing up in a small town, everyone knew everything about each other. This was also the same concept when it came to sports at BCHS. Brownstown was always known for great volleyball, football, and boys’ basketball teams. These teams always went far into the tournament every year in strive to win a state championship title. The same was not known for the girls’ basketball team to achieve.
INTRO A famous coach once said “he is a freak of nature he is 6’8 240 with a 44 inch vertical leap and a 4.4 second 40 yard dash time”. He is known as the “L train”, “The chosen one”, “The man child”, “The phenom”, and “King James”, but he is better known as LeBron James the basketball superstar. After Listening to this speech you will better understand LeBron James’s basketball career and accomplishments and some of who he is as a person. I feel that I am qualified to give this speech because I have spent an extensive amount of time researching in the public library and by the means of online resources.
