Ishraq” Enlightenment”: Reaching the Girls Left Behind 1. The purpose and goals of the program and type of population it serves. Ishraq started in 2008 as a 3-year program sponsored by ExxonMobil Foundation and operated in partnership with the National Council for Youth and the NGO Save the Children to improve opportunities for adolescent girls. It has been extended for another three years starting from 2011 under the name of Ishraq” sunrise” Plus. The program focuses on out-of-school adolescent girls in rural Upper Egypt (South Egypt) and has reached more than 1,000 girls in 21 villages during the first three years. Ishraq Plus provides 600 girls with an integrated curriculum of literacy, life skills, sports for social change in the context of Egypt and entrepreneurial training and offers 350 mothers entrepreneurial training and micro-loans to help engage them in income-generating activities The Ishraq” sunrise” program in rural Egypt has ambitious goals for adolescent girls to: a) Create safe spaces for girls to learn and play in their communities b) To increase their literacy c) To promote positive norms related to their abilities and life opportunities. 2. The context of the program Three governorates (Minya, Beni swef , Qena )Governorates 30 villages 60 classrooms 1800 girls where selected to apply that phase of the program , Minya Governorate consider one of the poorest regions in south Egypt (Upper Egypt ) according to national statistics in Egypt , with at least one space to house the program usually Village Youth centers and those villages differ religiously, ethnically , geographically . To briefly introduce the intervention of Ishraq in those villages: program lasts for 36 months for that stage, 2 sports classes weekly per village, four intensive classes per week, each class last for 3 hours .classes held in Youth Centers.
