Deviance and Sport: Steroid and Drug Usage In today’s society, there is an increased demand for athletes to be the best. Some athletes choose to get an edge over their competition by taking steroids or other drugs. This action maybe classified as deviant. This paper expresses this writer’s opinion that steroid and drug usage by athletes are deviant acts. An explanation as to why, in some cases, steroid and drug usage is connected to particular sports and examples of athletes with a history of usage will be addressed. Additionally, this writer will present what happens when athletes get involved in wrongful or unethical steroid and drug usage, why some athletes take drugs while playing and/or preparing for their sport, and the impact of such events on their sport. Lastly, this paper will address the importance of an ethical sporting society and the impact by those being deviant through steroid and drug usage. Deviance is defined as any behavior that breaks the rules or violates the social norms of a group, organization, community or society (Marshall, 2008). Deviance is not to be viewed as a type of person. It is a product of social systems, situations and established norms. Laws are legal norms for our criminal society. Best practices or clinical procedures are norms for our healthcare society. The ten commandants are norms for certain religions. Following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), game rules are norms for our college sport society. Emile Durkheim (early sociologist that analyzed deviance) focused on “anomie” and defined it as “a state of normlessness and breakdown which emerges most conspicuously at times of rapid social change” (Giddens, 1972). An anomie is a breakdown within a social order. Sports are characterized by regulation, rules, structure, control and culture (Eitzen & Sage, 1997). In America, our youth
