How can young married couples accomplish achieving spiritual and emotional maturity as a means of combating the high divorce rates? “Ideally, marriage partners in our society should be two adults who are physically, socially, and psychologically capable of modifying their individualities into mutually acceptable patterns that will bring them more joys than sorrows in their lifelong relationship with each other.” This ability to modify one’s behavior to give happiness to another is directly elated to one’s level of maturity. In reference to mate selection, young people should attempt to find as mature an individual as possible. One of the characteristics of the mature Christian is a definite separation from the world. “The message of the New Testament is that the most important thing in the world is that we should get our relationship right with God and receive this transforming experience..….” Pray with and for your spouse daily, for prayer is the glue that will hold you marriage together during the storms you will endure. Love God first, then learn how to love your spouse because love comes from God. Strengthen your love for God, then apply to your mate. The process of spiritual growth requires four elements analogous to those necessary for physical growth. A healthy Christian life needs a daily portion of the Word of God, submission to the Holy Spirit, some service for Christ, and worship before his throne. It is impossible to develop spiritual maturity without these factors being present each day. Emotional maturity is much more difficult, one mark of a mature person is the ability to look objectively at themselves and their relationship with others. They are able to examine their own personalities and pinpoint their own strengths and weaknesses, and try to improve those areas of weaknesses.
