The Sperm and the Egg PSY 265 Psychology of Human Sexuality The Sperm and the Egg We all have that “the talk” with our parents about the birds and the bees, or how babies are made. Have you ever really wondered what exactly goes on when two people indulge in intercourse? Or how exactly a sperm and an egg meet and what happens from there? In this paper things will be explained to you in a whole different level that you will have all the answers to your questions and more. First things first, we all know that men have a penis and woman have a vagina. What exactly do each of these consist of and how do they help, well let’s find out shall we. The inner part of the vagina consists of the cervix, the uterus, and two ovaries, that are all connected to the uterus by a fallopian tube. These are all structures that make up the woman’s reproductive system. A female is also born with all the ova she will every need throughout her life which adds up to a big 2 million. Since this number is so high not everyone hits puberty, not even half will hit puberty. Women actually don’t produce that many eggs it is still a mystery how an egg chooses to be fertilized. Now let’s get a little more indebt about this egg and its process. An egg starts out in the woman’s ovaries. The ovaries are also responsible for the production of estrogen and proestrogen. Eggs are fertilized in the fallopian tubes, and since sperm can live up to five days in a woman’s uterus, it could explain why women can get pregnant over several days each month based on when she ovulates. An egg, however, does have a more time-sensitive schedule. The egg is only fertile for about 12 to 24 hours after it leaves the ovary.
