Speech Pathology Speech Pathology, commonly called Speech Therapy, is a thriving career today. Speech pathologists help many people with speech, drinking, eating, and swallowing disabilities. They work with a very diverse clientele. To achieve the best results with each client, treatment programs vary according to need. Speech Therapists help their clients build their confidence and be successful. Though Speech Pathology is such a flourishing field, there are not many colleges that offer it. They could work in a school, hospital, nursing home, or have their own private practice. Each job would have different clients. One would work with young children, people who have been in car accidents, elderly people, or people who have had a stroke. Effective communication includes correct enunciation, good intonation, and comprehension. Treatments may involve vocal lessons, swallowing and muscle exercises, and coaching using many different methods. This is not always a one on one job; it usually entails input from physicians, teachers, counselors, and family members. In 2012, the average salary for a Speech Pathologist was $72,730. In the same year, the highest-paid Speech Pathologist made $107,650 and the lowest-paid made $44,380. Schools typically do not pay as much as the health care industry pays Speech Pathologists. A few of the top-paying areas are Sherman, Texas, New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Bowling Green, Kentucky.
