Many companies are developed and continue to thrive up to now. They make us laugh, they make us cry, and they make us want to scream in anger and punch a wall. Perhaps that is just the reason why we enjoy them so much. Good morning Ms. Isacco and fellow students. Today, I will be discussing the history of video games, why people are addicted, and the psychological reasons that make us play or not play video games. The very first video game was actually invented in 1942, and it was called NIM. The arcade game industry entered its golden age in 1978 with the release of Space Invaders by Taito, a success that inspired dozens of manufacturers to enter into the market. 1980 and 1990 was when handheld gaming consoles were introduced. In 1991 Nintendo made a huge success by inventing the Gameboy. It was released with popular games we still enjoy today such as Super Mario and Tetris. Almost everyone had a Gameboy. The PlayStation was then released on December 3, 1994. After the year 2000, numerous consoles were subsequently released for public consumption. The Wii U and 3DS are the latest systems. Many other games and applications have also been developed for handheld and mobile devices. Computer games became increasingly popular with the graphics steadily improving. Many people enjoy video games but, do you ever bother asking yourself why we are gaming? It isn’t just a matter of the game being fun. Why is it fun? Why do we enjoy roaming around fictional worlds? Scientists claim that there are 3 factors to consider: Competence, Autonomy, and Relativeness. Competence means that you feel as if you are learning, growing, and thus have a sense of accomplishment.
