Los Angeles, California September 8, 2009 THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much! Everybody, please, be seated. It’s great to be here in L.A. at Jefferson high school’s graduation ceremony. I want to thank Mr. Dalton for that excellent introduction and the wonderful Ms. Stewart for the invitation to speak on behalf of every American about the future of our education. (Applause.) Firstly what I want you to remember is that each of us is here because somebody somewhere invested in our success. Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” And I have to say that I couldn’t agree more. For years, our education has relied on the services provided publicly by the government. You are the new generation that will bring us out from the bridge we are under at this moment. As it has always done, progress will come bit by bit, inch by inch and in fits and starts because it’s not always a straight line or a smooth path. We can only walk up the ladder if we stand together and become the best we can be. I know first hand what it’s like to be cared for and to be brought up with the high ambitions that I needed to succeed. I had teachers in school and professors at the university who cared about me and ultimately, with the help of a community and country that supported me; I was able to get a good education. And much like many of us was able to obtain student loans. Without them, I probably wouldn’t be standing where I am today. And everything happened because people saw something in me that I wasn’t able to see in myself. And that isn’t only the truth for me as the same things happened for my wife and hopefully will happen to our children. Still, the world has changed a lot since I grew up.
