Explore the ways disturbed characters are presented in Shakeapeare’s Macbeth and Browning’s My Last Duchess, The Laboratory and Porphyria’s Lover. This is essentially a “use of language” essay, you need to show HOW the disturbed natures of the characters are conveyed, not just say how they show themselves. The essential point of this essay is to demonstrate what Shakespeare and Browning DO to convey the disturbed nature of the characters – not just saying what disturbed things the characters say or do, but what poetic and dramatic techniques the authors use to show their distrurbed natures. You MUST use quotations to back up every point you make. If you are hoping for the highest grades (B and above) you must make comparisons between the characters in the poems and Lady Macbeth.

Overview and Context The poem might be viewed as a literary exercise in logic as much as a ‘love’ poem’. Marvell’s speaker uses a tripartite structure to follow his argument to its conclusion, effectively forming a ‘syllogism’. This poem is also a prime example of the ‘sex-death’ juxtaposition (which critics such as Roland Barthes have explored in more detail), also a marked characteristic of Romeo and Juliet. Misspelling and using poor grammatical mistakes can usually result in those letters of acceptance or applications being put into the “no” pile. The people who make these decisions usually relate them to the person having poor communication skills and someone who doesn’t pay attention to detail. Those seeking careers in writing and verbal communications are rare these days so people feel that it is not important to keep up with correct grammar. He talks a lot about this thing called nontraditional grammar which in younger generations the content of the message was far more important than the actual structure of what the message needed to say.
Donna Woolfolk Cross explains in her article, "Propaganda: How Not to Be Bamboozled" that propaganda shapes our attitudes on thousands of subjects by tactics such as name-calling which "consists of labeling people or ideas with words of bad connotation" (Cross 210). Aunt Lydia uses name-calling by stating that these women were lazy sluts and explains how important and how much better childbirth is in Gilead in comparison to the old days. Her manipulative speech is what blocks the handmaids from thinking, only to react unquestioningly. Cross's article explains that glittering generalities "try to get us to accept and agree without examining the evidence" (Cross 211). Aunt Lydia's use of glittering generalities and convincing tone of voice makes these women accept whatever she defines them as, giving no reason to think otherwise.
I know a lot of words; I just don’t use them in my everyday conversation, thus making it more difficult to incorporate in my essay. The other parts I was dissatisfied with were my introduction and conclusion. After the revision of my paper I noticed they needed tremendous work. These non-verbal messages that we send are eye contact, facial expressions, voice tone, rate of speech, silences and pauses, hand gestures, body positioning, and body distance. It is astonishing how complicated and how simple communication between cultures and genders can be. There are very successful people that have the ability to tap into the 90 percent of communication that reaches and leads people. The reason being is because today many people do not understand the messages being used verbally and many people are reacting more by using non-verbal communication. Communicating with different cultures can be very complicated and very misunderstood for the obvious reasons of language barriers, but communicating with different genders can arise some difficult challenges.
