English essay practice In this essay I will be analysing how speech in a soap drama represents real life speech. The soap drama I will be analysing is an episode of eastenders and how the language used is similar to the language that is used in actual speech. I will be looking at things like filled pauses, idiolect, eye dialect and fillers. The first thing I am going to analyse is ellipsis. Ellipsis is when a word or phrase is missed out but the person who is being spoken to knows what the person speaking means. Mo uses ellipsis when he says “Looks like someone could do with a fry up.” If it was in standard English Mo would have said “It looks like someone could do with a fry up.” This represents actual speech well because today people are lazy in speech. By this I mean that they miss out words a lot. It is also like slang because depending on where you’re from depends on what words you miss out as people from different areas of the country miss out different words. Another thing I am going to analyse is colloquial language which is a person’s own way of speaking, slang. Stacey uses slang when she says “saddo.” This is a good example of how speech in a soap drama represents real life speech because it shows how different people use their own different words. Here Stacey uses her own colloquial language to call somebody. This is also a good example because in real life everybody calls different people different names. Colloquial language is also affected by where you live or where you’re from. I am also going to analyse is elision which is where one word slides into another. In this transcript Stacey uses elision when she says “S’all a waste of time and money.” This represents actual speech well because in everyday speech people use elision a lot without even knowing. A lot of script writers use this because it is very common in everyday speech. Elision is
