Andrew Vu 12/16/14 per.3 Mrs.Dadabhoy Antony’s Speech The power of words and their ability to make people, believe or take action. Julius Caesar, was a play written by WIlliam Shakespeare. Cassius wanted Brutas to be part of assassinating Caesar because he thinks it’s the best for Rome. When Caesar died, Brutus and Mark Antony had a funeral speech for him. Antony was trying to convince the crowd that the assassination was a mistake without saying anything bad about conspirators. In the play, Antony’s speech is a success because he incorporated logos, ethos, and pathos, and was more persuasive, while Brutus speech failed because Brutus only used logos when he spoke about Caesar's death and he only had hard facts about Caesar and Brutus tried to sway their opinion with forcefulness, simply stating the reasons for his actions First of all, Antony's speech was more persuasive because he made points to contrast what Brutus said in his speech about Caesar. Antony starts off with,” [f]riends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears,”(3.2.73). This means that he has something important to say so he wants the crowd to get their full attention on him and it also leads to him being friends with Caesar. Antony repeatedly use the word, honorable, to describe Brutus which made his speech very paralipsis. One example is when he said,” I come bury Caesar, not to praise him,” (3.2.74). This quote means that Antony is only here to give a speech about his friend Caesar and has nothing against the assassination. Throughout Antony’s speech, he was using devices, tactics, and his sympathy. Brutus had one point which was him killing Caesar for Rome to stand on and the citizens can die as free men. For instance, Brutus says, “Had you rather Caesar was living and die all slaves than that Caesar were dead, to life all free men,”(3.2.21-23)? It was countered by Antony saying
