Victoria Guillermo Period 5 1/11/13 English 10P Book Review on Speak by Laurie Anderson In Speak by Laurie Anderson, Melinda Sordino begins her freshman year at Merryweather High School. The summer before her freshman year, a traumatizing event happened to her at a party her friends took her to, which caused Melinda to become the social reject of her town. Melinda constantly isolates herself from the cruel, harsh world. Speak gives you inspiration to those who need to speak up for themselves, those who need courage for any situation and for those who just need to know they’re not alone in what they’re going through in this judgmental society we live in today. The author, Laurie Anderson did an amazing job on capturing the true aura and essences of high school life for the untypical teenager. Laurie Anderson actually based Melinda on herself and the environment she grew up in. Laurie Anderson wrote this novel to help teens like me understand its fine to be different and that we need to speak up for ourselves when we need to. Laurie Anderson wrote Speak in a way that Melinda and the other character grow as they progress throughout the book. The plot of Speak is quite unique compared to others books I’ve read; it includes minor plot twists that create a huge affect on the characters especially Melinda. Speak by Laurie Anderson gave me a whole new perspective about life. Life is about struggles and tests that will make you a better person, the truth will always come out when it needs to be and that its okay to be alone. Speak made me feel that I’m not alone in the struggles I’m facing. As I read about Melinda and her progress to be a better her, I couldn’t help but feel like I could make that progress to be a better me. Speak is an inspiration book that could also be a guideline on how to help you have courage when you need to. I would highly
