But Africa's government was the worst example of racialism and violation of the human rights. However, Nelson Mandela still stood up for what he thought was right and, led his people to freedom. He rose above his personal interests and always kept the interest of his nation above all. He was offered attractive gifts as a price of his loyalty and sincerity but he never accepted those offers. He accepted a prolonged imprisonment over the freedom that was over shadowed with a piece of slavery.
Red is the mediator or polemicist, meaning that he’s a smooth talker and debater. In Shawshank he’s know as the man that can get anything for you from the outside … for a price of course. He’s a crook with a good heart and somewhat good intentions, but he confides to the prison walls to blur the lines of reality outside in the real world. Inside the prison he has value to his name and his insecurities are concealed by the opaque violence, and hard stance of Shawshank’s environment. Hope motivates him, but he does anything in his will to cloak that fact.
This becomes one of the main motifs of the novel. | 2. “No matter how innocent a slave might be – it availed him nothing, when accused by Mr. Gore of a misdemeanor. To be accused was to be convicted, and to be convicted was to be punished; the one always following the other with immutable certainty.” (Douglass 13). | As an American, I appreciate and sometimes take for granted the rights and freedoms I am given every day.
Iago, to everyone else, seems like an honest and good man who will do everything in his power to help those around him succeed, but is really just power-hungry, two-faced and manipulative. He is, however, clever, cunning and philosophical, which can be accepted as positive traits. It is these traits that enable him to gain an insight into human nature, and ultimately exploit it, destroying the lives of those around him. Cassio is a character whom the audience don't know much about, but from the story they can understand that he loves his job as a lieutenant, and cares a lot about his reputation. This becomes clear after he is fired from his position, as he says to Iago; "Reputation, reputation, reputation!
William Wells Brown was a former slave who eventually was able to escape to freedom and live the remainder of his life as a free man, writer, and lecturer. Brown’s novel Clotel is known as the first novel to be written by an African American and ex-slave. His novel focuses on three different generations of slave women including the main character Clotel, a mulatto woman, and her sisters. Clotel’s mother is a slave woman and her father is the nation’s president, Thomas Jefferson. Brown’s novel is assumed to be based on the unconfirmed rumors that Thomas Jefferson fathered a child with one of his slaves, Sally Hemmings (Kirkpatrick, 2004).
He pushed for independence which resulted in the Missouri Compromise. He was best know for promoting several major compromises for the freedom of slaves. He ran for presidency against Adams and lost. But in 1820 Adams elected him as his Secretary of State. Henry Clay died on June 29, 1852 in Washington D.C. Robert Young Hayne was born November 10, 1791 in South Carolina.
Frank on the other hand does not struggle with class issues, nor does he fail to recognize the world he lives in. However, Frank is also a prime example of the effects of primary socialisation, as demonstrated by his eccentric father and his brother who is of a violent mental disposition. A culmination of Frank’s upbringing and penis envy produced a violent sadistic character. Although both characters share some poignant similarities, both share an absentee mother, which represents in their mind the evil of all women; ultimately it’s Clegg that’s more tightly bound then Frank. Clegg wins the pools; it would seem to provide an escape from his mundane life as a clerk.
When Andy finds a way to prove his innocence, the Warden soon suppresses the opportunity as he realizes the true worth of Andy and his activities. In reference to the films tagline, ‘Fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free’, recurring messages of hope are conveyed in different circumstances in this film, mainly between Andy and Red. Andy refuses to give up hope, whereas Red has surrendered to the notion that ‘hope is a dangerous thing’. These contrasting beliefs and the adversities they experience throughout the film help the characters to bond a lifelong friendship. It is one of my personal favorite films because of its simple, but provoking storyline, wich director Frank Darabont managed to pull off in a classic style, making it feel like a timeless piece of cinematography.
He is dedicated to the tasks he’s given and is strong and courageous when knocked down. Not only is he a role model towards his friends, but to all others who surround him. He made a huge sacrifice knowing that his actions would benefit and impact himself and others in a significant way. This character cares about the treatment of himself and others and because of his actions, he was able to die a free man. All of these attributes demonstrated in the movie, are why I think Piet reflects the ideals of a ‘Global Citizen’.
He is another example of a literary hero, although more of a classic example. In the end, both make the ultimate sacrifice by dying for the benefit of another. This heroic deed makes them both heroes. The perfect hero always does what is right, and is helpful. Dumbledore helps the students by leading them in the right direction.
