Bethany HamiltonBethany began surfing when she was only 11 years old. She was a young professional: winning contests and even getting a sponsorship with Rip Curl. On October 31, 2003, she gained national attention when her arm is devoured by a 13-foot long tiger shark. She has now made an amazing recovery and returned to surfing. The author of a successful book, Bethany continues to participate in many surf competitions.
Even though she does not play professionally, Misty’s athleticism still shows. Clearly, Mksty May-Treanor deserves to be named “the greatest beach volleyball team of all time” alongside with her partner Kerri Walsh. They both have been together from 2003 to 2009. Throughout those years, they have both trained together and fought together to earn the victories they have battled for. It is obvious that Misty-May Treanor greatly deserves the awards and gold medals she has earned by playing the sport she loves the most.
Kate also believed that education was the key to success in life, she valued learning and this was because of Matt’s influence on her. She made herself into a stunning performer, alongside her husband; they created “The Flying Avalon’s.” She performed many wild stunts, “double summersaults and heart-stopping catches.” (pg190) A horrific tragedy ended the career of “The Flying Avalon’s.” While Anna was 7 months pregnant, lighting struck the main metal pole running directly through the center of the circus tent. The blast of electricity resulted in 3 deaths, one of whom was Anna’s husband Harry Avalon. Along with her talent, Anna’s gracefulness never failed even as an elderly lady she is still as graceful as she was when she was in her twenties although she is blind, “ she has never upset an object or so much as brushed a magazine onto the floor. She has never lost her balance or bumped in to a closet door left carelessly open.” the “catlike precision of her movements” (pg 190) were probably due to the training she had in her early years. When Anna’s house was accidentally caught fire trapping her daughter inside she did not hesitate to risk her own life to save her daughter.

She thought the end was near; she was in the middle of the ocean with the nearest port being 20 miles out. She held on all night hour on end until her mussels just could not handle it anymore and she let go.
Lance Armstrong is known as a competitive bike racer who has accomplished a great deal throughout his life including seven tour de France victories and surviving deadly cancer. His life includes many ups and downs and is full of successes and failures. Even though Lance Armstrong battled with cancer he was still able to fight and accomplish his goals. Lance Armstrong’s call to adventure started when Lance received his first bike realizing that biking was going to be something that would ultimately change his life. He said, “When the other kids were swimming at the country club, I was biking for miles after school, because it was my chance” (Armstrong 26).

Cori Schumacher, the world’s leading women’s longboard champion, has always dreamed of becoming a professional female surfer at an age as early as twelve. However, her journey to success was not so much of a smooth ride particularly because very few women in the surfing and longboarding industry are ever able to earn a living by doing what they are best known for. In fact, after Schumacher competed for her second world longboard title in 2001, the young surfer soon realized that she could no longer support herself financially. In The Awakening by Kate Chopin, the main character Edna has a fascination with the sea that is never satiated. In the outset of her life she is mystified by it because she is unable to swim. To Edna, the sea represents the ultimate place for solitude and contemplation; the sea invites “the soul to wander for a spell of abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation.” (13). When she finally learns to swim she pushes herself to go farther and farther, where no woman has ever gone before. The progression of Edna skill in the water also closely correlates with her mental awakening.
“As the hunter is hunted down, she slays her enemies on sacred ground.” Throughout life we will experience things that will sometimes cause us want to give up or give in, but in order to be successful one must face the trials and tribulations with strength and hope. One day looking back upon each and every obstacle, then seeing how far one came because of not giving up, a new admiration will come about for one’s self. Gloria Allred has proven this to be so, throughout her lifetime. Although she was faced with obstacles, she never gave up. Developing from a young child to an American lawyer, Gloria has exhibited great strength, courage, and bravery.
