Sophie’s Choice Essay – Guilt Why is it that one feels guilty for one’s past experiences? People approach guilt in different ways, some positive and some negative. A person’s past experiences affects their present state of mind which later affects their future. In the novel Sophie’s Choice characters Stingo, Sophie and Nathan approach their guilt in many ways. These characters’ guilt led them to depression and even happiness. They all experienced similar emotions that led to each character’s actions. Sophie’s guilt explains her actions, and why she tried so many times to commit suicide. Sophie’s choice forced Sophie to choose between her son or daughter to live. “You may keep one of your children,” he repeated. “The other one will have to go. Which one will you keep?”(Styron 529) Her decision gave her guilt for the rest of her life; she never would forgive herself for making such a life changing choice. Sophie refused to choose at first but had to make a decision. “I can’t choose! I can’t choose!” she began to scream.” (Styron 529) Sophie deep down didn’t want to choose one child over the other but she was forced to if she wanted at least one to survive. Sophie chose her son Jan over her daughter Eva. “Take the baby!” She called out. “Take my little girl!” Sophie chose Jan over Eva. Soon after, Sophie felt guilty and wished she would’ve never chosen either one and given up her life instead. At the same time, Sophie dealt with the guilt of her father. Sophie was ashamed of her father because of his Nazi practices against Jews. “What would they think if they knew about professor Breganski, or knew that for three years she had carried on her person a copy of that pamphlet?”(Styron 405) Sophie was ashamed of who her father truly was.
