Son of Satan – characterization The main character in the short story, Son of Satan, is an eleven-year-old boy, who is telling us his story through his eyes. He is the leader among his friends, even though he does not always wish to be the leader of the group. On page 40 lines 32-34 he expresses that he feels like letting Simpson go, but he has to show, that he is the young leader, which means he cannot show any sympathy. He expresses this a couple of times, in this short story. On page 42 lines 26-29, he thinks that Simpson had suffered enough, and again because he is the leader, he cannot show any signs of weakness. The narrator is under peer pressure, when being the leader of the group of boys. In many situations, he feels bad about the things he does, and knows that it is wrong, but he does not push back, because that is what he his father has taught him to do. The father’s violent nature has affected the narrator to become violent as well. The father does not realize that his son is much like himself. The father has raised his son in to the violence, by beating him, when he did something wrong. The title of the short story “Son of Satan” is a good description of the father son relationship. The father is like Satan, a cruel and violent person, who has raised his son to become very much like him. The son wants authority and leadership as well, and believes violence is the answer to everything. Like the father shows his authority to his son, the son wants to show his authority to the other boys in the group. The narrator goes through a change throughout the short story. In the beginning he is the leader and the person who is violent to others. He hunts people down and has control over them.
