During the course of the novel of ‘Deadly Unna?’ the readers are exposed to the negativity between the father and his son. This affects Blacky in way that his self-esteem is almost non-existent, and the negativity is prominent throughout the novel. Examples of the neglect shown by his father are that of the time when Bob refers to Blacky as a ‘gutless wonder’, and the journey we take through the story of Blacky’s deteriorating respect for him. The ‘gutless wonder’ incident was a influential part of the novel, as Blacky realises that his Dad isn’t one to take advice of someone he feels is inferior than him, thus saying, ‘My own son, a gutless wonder. A gutless fucking wonder!’ When Blacky explains to his father about the storm, Bob insults him rather than swallow his pride and takes his son’s advice on board.
Abner Snopes, the father is creating a war between the wealthy and poor. Out of despise for the wealthy he burns down their barns for his own personal satisfaction. The relationship between father and son is very precious. He continues with violent aggression throughout the story. Colonel Sarty Snopes, his son, realizes so when he has to choose between doing the right thing or loyalty to his family, his father.
The father's protectiveness is very evident many times throughout the novel, however one of the most notable events was when a man threatens his son with a knife and the father shoots the man in the head. Although this action was probably necessary, the fathers downfall is his suspicion that everyone is their enemy. His father's paranoia causes them to move constantly from camp to camp, consequently, never getting the chance to make friends with anyone. His son, on the other hand, is much more sensitive and innocent. He feels very safe with his father but at the same time he questions some of his decisions.
Shmuel’s hatred of the soldiers is finally justified, and to Bruno, a boy who idolized soldiers, such as his father, the abusive soldiers were anything but idols. Bruno then comments that he “doesn’t like it here”, to which Shmuel replies “neither do I” (page 208) It is at this point in the story that the reader realizes how innocent Shmuel is. Although Bruno has been shielded by his parents, Shmuel has had to experience hardship and suffering, giving him the image of a child who had forgone his innocence. The boy is feeling compassion toward Ely. The feeling the boy has toward Ely is helping the father feel maybe some compassion for him too. He doesn’t trust anyone but the way his son is acting with the old man seems to be changing the way the father feels. The boy also encounters the feeling of being scared. He doesn’t want to be into danger or have his father in danger.

Black men were not men at all, but they were property. Huck struggled with this throughout the book as he felt guilt and condemnation for not returning Jim back to his rightful owner, Widow Douglas. But even in the peculiar relationship, it was confusing as to which would be the father figure, Huck or Jim. Jim definitely filled the role as protector, when he shielded Huck from seeing corpse of his godforsaken Pap. Jim also displayed the image of father that would give up his own life for his boy when stayed with Tom after he got shot.
At one point, when Chlomo was being beaten by Idek, he was ashamed of his father and he didn’t feel any grief for him. When Rabbi Eliahou’s son abondons him, Elie prays to God to never let him abandon his own father like that. Elie says “Rabbi Eliahou’s son had felt that his father was growing weak, he had believed that the end was near and had sought this separation in order to get rid of the burden, to free himself from an encumbrance which could lessen his own chances of survival. I had done well to forget that. And I was glad that Rabbi Eliahou should continue to look for his beloved son.
Amir only has one thing on his mind in the beginning of the novel, he is ambitious for his father's affection and approval. Amir is very different than his father, Baba. For example, he enjoys reading and writing and he is a coward. Baba sees this as a weakness, and since Baba is a strong, brave and confident man he disapproves of his son which leads him to give Amir less affection than he would if the two were more alike. The less affection Baba gives Amir, the more he wants it.“If I hadn't seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I'd never believe he's my son.” This directly shows how ashamed
Gresyon Dixon has a father that is very loving and kind, but as a child, his grandfather physically abused his wife as well as Dixon’s father. Dixon’s father grew up in an environment where this was the norm. But as a child, his father learned that fear was the outcome of this normal abusive brutality. Dixon says that because of this established feeling of fear, his father was able to grow and develop feelings of kindness and love. Not only that, but because both traits were apparent in his life, he was able to choose for himself the type of life he wanted to live.
