Thesis Statement: Somali Pirates pose a threat to overseas cargo transportation, which puts lives in danger. I. Introduction A. Hook: Imagine being held captive by pirates, not knowing the outcome. B. Transition To Thesis: Main Idea One: “Reports in the world press would have us believe that piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Gulf of Guinea have reached epidemic proportions” (Trelawny, 2013, para 1). Main Idea Two: “Over the last several years, piracy off the coast of East Africa has resulted in significant risks to merchant vessels and their crews” (Schranz, 2012, para 1). II. Support: SECTION One: Main Idea One: “Reports in the world press would have us believe that piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Gulf of Guinea have reached epidemic proportions” (Trelawny, 2013, para 1). A. Body Paragraph One: Piracy against ships in the Gulf of Guinea needs to be stopped. (Schranz, 2012, para 1). 1. According to Schranz (2012),”In 2010, there were at least 49 successful hijackings with around 219 pirate attacks” (para 1). 2. The International Maritime Bureau reports that over 1,180 hostages were taken at sea during this period with 86% coming at the hands of Somali Pirates (Schranz, 2012, para 1). 3. Most hostages were held for ransom and released unharmed; but in 2010, at least 13 were injured and 8 were killed (Schranz, 2012, para 1) 4. ANALYSIS: Many innocent people have been put in danger over the last several years due to pirating. B. Body Paragraph Two: Armed robbery against ships in Gulf of Guinea needs to be stopped. 1. In the beginning of 2011 over 100 vessels were attacked (Schranz, 2012, para 1). 2. Fifteen hijackings yielded 300 hostages and 7 deaths (Schranz, 2012, para 1). 3.
