Solve the Nursing shortage problem in Macau Macau’s medical care is facing a big problem; the number of nurse in Macau is very low for a long time. Although some people have been concerned about this problem, it did not have any improvement. This problem is very important to all of us; Firstly, it will have a considerable impact for the lack of qualified nursing staffs on patient care, moreover, in hospitals which have not enough staffs, the rates of mortality may increase during the surgeries and in some clinical operations because no nurse to assist, this problem relates to the patients’ own life directly, all patients’ health will be affect by the nursing shortage. Thirdly, patients rely on the nurses for all of their health, but when nurses are busy on others, patients’ health suffers. (Sara John, n.d.) On the other hand, “Nurses are used to hard work, but an understaffed hospital saddles them with unnecessary strain.” (Meredith Veto, n.d., para.4) Meredith Veto (n.d.) mentioned that the AACN has reported that the lack of staff raises the nurses’ stress level, impacts the satisfaction of this career, and drives many nurses to give up the profession. But why the problem of the shortage of medical staff so serious? According to many surveys, the main reasons are be include as follows: Firstly, the growth rate of Macau’s population problem; secondly, the aging populations and increasing of the diseases; thirdly, the training resources, faculty, and facilities are limited in Macau; last but not least, people misunderstanding of the nursing profession and no freshman participate in this profession, these reasons have all contributed to the nursing shortage.
