1. Who was Ernest Hemingway and what characterized him as a writer? Write a short description. American writer. 1899,journalist in Kansas. Brief, minimalistic, straight forward. He served as a ambulamce driver. Fearless physical writer. 2. Ernest Hemingway once remarked of his writing style, “I always try to write on the principle of the iceberg. There are seven-eights of it underwater for every part that shows.” What do you think Hemingway means? Use examples form “Soldier’s Home” to illustrate the “iceberg” principle. What parts of the story are underwater? The quote “I always try to write on the principle of the iceberg. There are seven-eights of it underwater for every part that shows.”, means that Hemmingway tries to write a little cryptic. He tries to make the reader think about what he is saying. He does this by leaving trails of information in the text. In the text “Soldier’s Home”, the main character, Krebs, is talking about his feelings and not being able to love. We don’t really get to know why he can’t love, but we get the idea of it because of his past. But then Hemmingway writes “Krebs looked at the bacon, fat hardening on his plate”, which doesn’t really make any sense, when you read it, but the curious reader will dig into these words and figure out the meaning behind it. There are some parts of the story that Hemmingway does not describe. For an example, when we hear about the picture, where Krebs is standing with a corporeal and two German girls, who is not smiling. We don’t get to know, why the girls are not smiling and what importance that picture has for the story, but if you start analyzing it, you will find a meaning of it and connect it with other parts of the story. There were also times in the text when Krebs says that he is not a part of god’s kingdom. He just says it, without explaining the meaning of it or why he isn’t so. He
