On May 11, 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state to join the United States of America (Minnesota). Early on, the state was filled with vast resources and an abundance of wildlife. Most of the wildlife, such as deer, elk and moose, contributed to the settler’s diet. Natural predators created competition and hardships for the new settlers; one of these animals was the Gray Wolf. The decrease in the amount of large mammals that the settlers consumed left wolves’ preying on cattle.
The black bear can climb trees while he is retreating, by contrast, the brown bear has to stand his ground because his claws are too small and improperly shaped, so they must respond to danger by warding off any would be attackers. Bears have been dehumanized. An open dumpster in Yellowstone was closed because, both the black and brown came to associate humans with food and lost their natural fear of them. Many native American tribes both respected and feared the brown bear, even thinking it was a god. One tale tells of how the black bear was a great spirit, while the brown bear was created by the evil spirit.
Some say that the wolves are not biologically ready to be taken off the endagered species list and still need protection. Should wolves still be protected or should they be allowed to be hunted and killed. The grey wolf The grey wolf ranges form about 4 to 6 feet in lengthe and can weigh up to as much as 50 pounds. It is noticible by its distinct thick fur coat which is outlined with a plethoria of silver and mostly grey. They are born for the mountains being able to tred snow very easily.
The grey wolf is a social animal, traveling in packs consisting of a mated pair and the pair’s adult offspring (Mech., 2003). The grey wolf is typically an apex predator throughout its range. It feeds primarily on large ungulates, but it also eats smaller animals, carrion, and livestock. Arguably, the reasons for the decline in wolf population are that they are highly territorial animals, and established territories than they require to survive to ensure steady supply of prey. Wolves defend their territory from other packs through a combination of scent marking, direct attacks and howling (Asa., 1990).
Whitetail deer usually have twins but unfortunately sometimes one of them dies. Male deer also called bucks are very territorial and usually stick to a one square mile radius, when the food conditions are adequate. The bucks grow antlers which fall off yearly and grow back bigger. When the antlers fall off they are called sheds and can be found and used to make chandeliers. The bucks scrape the trees to mark their territory.
Largest in North America, the gray wolf can range in different colors depending on which forest of Tundra they range upon. They can live up to ten to eighteen years and average the length of 102-163 cm. An adult may even weigh in up to 85-115 pounds, but smaller is the female weighing 50 to 100 pounds. Considered the world’s most natural villain, the gray wolf has rarely ever attacked humans. However, they may take it upon them to attack our everyday domesticated animals like our dogs, rabbits, cats, or even our livestock, which can cause tragedy because then they are trapped and shot.
New trends show that only 20 percent of the pine beetle population dies off now, allowing insects to thrive in places where they simply should not exist says Amy Marquis. With this new trend of insect survival it is affecting the normal diet of the Yellowstone Grizzly Bear. The female grizzly bears diet highly depended on the seeds from the white bark Pine, “from a grizzly bears perspective, a single white bark pine can produce the equivalent of 40-50 Big Macs a day.”(Marquis 2) With the raising climate in the west some models suggest that milder winters could bring grass-eaters and a variety of insects that Grizzly’s would be able to consume, says Wilcox. Even though the Beetle kill is limiting the Grizzly’s food source, nature always finds a way to balance out the problem. Not only is the beetle epidemic killing off the ecosystem for the Grizzly Bears, it is also contributing to this little problem we keep hearing about on the news, and by Politian’s, Global Warming.
Taylor and Francis state: “Holsworth (1973) reported the results of a controlled hunt on the Griffith Island where the deer population was reduced from about 300 to 100 during eight hunting trips between October 1962 and April 1968 (Taylor and Francis 1).” Hunting provides incomparably healthier meat than the average processed meat. The diet of deer consists mainly of fruit and vegetables. They choose the cleanest of the streams from which to drink. The fact that deer are constantly alert and moving proves that they have a very small percentage of body fat. Venison is extremely lean.
The wolves diet is,they mainly eat meat, which includes wild sheep, wild goat, musk, and domestic cattle. Lone wolves well eat smaller animals such as shrews, nuts ,berries, rabbit, hare, birds, voles, mice, woodchucks, and raccoons. Wolves hunt in packs because its easier to catch their food. first they closer until they scare their prey and make it start to run. then they start to chase the animal until finally they reach the animal and jump on its back and bring the animal down and all the wolves swarm around the dead animal and start to eat
The two major insistences of wolves and humans conflicts involve a median of livestock or domestic animals. Wolves primarily feed on deer, elk, and moose, and only occasionally will prey on domestic livestock. This behavior can be culled by the rancher taking a few precautions to limit wolves and livestock interactions. The problem lies in effecting a change with ranchers and farmers in the areas that are
