SOC 101 Reflective Essay Submitted By- Varun Bansal UFV BBA-II 200123939 Submitted To- Prof. Archna Sahni Submitted on – March 31, 2015 I would like to start my reflective essay by quoting Anita Roddick “If you think you’re too small to have an impact, Try going to bed with a mosquito in the room”. Surely, Sociology has started to make me think a lot on how things are. Sociology as a subject came as a surprise to me. I couldn’t imagine at the first day of my class how interesting this subject could be. Since then, it has changed me and how I think. In this class, I came to know of things that I could have never known in any other class. What also inspired me is our professor Mrs. Sahni. I haven’t been under guidance of such a professor like you who is so open-minded and has vast knowledge of different groups and societies around the world. She’s very different from other professor, like once she said in class, “I don’t treat you as students or children, and all of you are matured enough to be treated as small”. I don’t remember the exact words but I know what it meant that brought about positivity in me. Now, lets talk about how this subject brought about a change in me. The learning about different perspectives, specially the functionalist perspective that says each aspect of society is interdependent and contributes to society's stability and functioning as a whole. The perfect example of cow studied in class that explains how cow has different functions in different societies. In US, the best function of cow for people is beef but in India, Cow is sacred and is worshipped by the people. This helped me to figure out many things like men and women have each their own set of tasks to accomplish, each complimenting the other so that men would make money and women would care for the household. True for many families in India.
