Is Sociology a Science? Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. In an older and closely related meaning, "science" refers to the body of reliable knowledge itself, of the type that can be logically and rationally explained. Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena. The term science also refers to the organized body of knowledge people have gained using that system. Less formally, the word science often describes any systematic field of study or the knowledge gained from it. Science: Empiricism and Rationalism Positivism 1. Origins of Sociology * A. Comte: French Mathematician of the 18th century * Impressed by improvements made in Natural Sciences * At this time, notion of Science= methods and principles employed in N.Sciences * Any Discipline would be considered as Science + receive greater credibility if it followed N.Sciences * Develop Positivist approach in Sociology 2.
