Society's Dependence on Mass Media

If you watched the news today you were one of many viewers across the state or even the country. Watching the news is a form of mass media. Mass media is any form of media that is widely and rapidly distributed to large audiences with the goal of influencing them on a topic. Our society is dependant on media in so many ways. The advertising market uses mass media every day to persuade consumers to purchase their products. This usually is in the form of magazine advertisements or radio and TV commercials. If it wasn’t for mass media a lot of products would go unnoticed and sales for those companies would fall. The ability for many children to view their toys on TV is a great benefit for these businesses during the Christmas season. There are many branches of mass media. One of them is radio. Millions of people across the America tune into radio stations, especially during long trips or while they’re stuck in rush hour traffic on the way home from work. Many accidents have been prevented because listeners were informed through the station they were listening to about construction areas and existing accidents. Thanks to the internet, computers, and TV stations all working seamlessly together students attending school now know well ahead of time whether school is closed during bad winter weather. Before they had to listen to the radio which usually wasn’t as up to date with school closing information as TV news stations now are today. One prime example of how much our society depends on mass media for news was during the last presidential election and during the tragic events of September 11. TV’s across the country were tuned in to hear the latest breaking news on both situations with people tuned into the news for months after 911. The internet is probably the newest and one of the most widely used forms of mass media at the present time. The
