Social Structure Theory xxxxxxxxxxxxx CJS/231 August 31, 2015 Mitchell Jessip Social Structure Theory: Tent City The definition of Social, as defined by Merriam Webster, is “relating to or involving activities in which people spend time talking to each other or doing enjoyable things with each other, liking to be with and talk to people, happy to be with people or of or relating to people or society in general”. The definition of Structure, as defined by Merriam Webster, is “the way that something is built, arranged, or organized, the way that a group of people are organized or something (such as a house, tower, bridge, etc.) that is built by putting parts together and that usually stands on its own”. When added together, Merriam Webster defines Social Structure as “the internal institutionalized relationships built up by persons living within a group (such as a family or community) especially with regard to the hierarchical organization of status and to the rules and principles regulating behavior or the social organization of a society constituting an integrated whole”. “Tent City” in Phoenix, Arizona” was founded in 1993 by Sheriff Joe Arpaio who has been the Sheriff of Maricopa County, AZ for over 20 years. The prisons in Phoenix were facing overcrowding issues so the city starting looking to build new jails. Sheriff Joe Arpaio instead decided to set up Tent City, which houses hundreds of Army surplus tents from the Korean War era and uses to them to house prisoners. In this paper I will address the following questions: How does the video you selected support a social structure theory? What is the primary subject or content of the video? What social issues are raised in the video? What major principles of sociological theory are addressed in the video? What might be some possible ramifications for social policy change?
