Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Networking on Students Performances Abstract With time almost all students are actively becoming a part of social networking websites. The literature review will focus on both the positive effects of social networking sites on students, and the negative effects of it. By using seven relevant studies, the review will support the hypothesis of how social networking may enhance and also detract students’ performance in school. With support of studies, it will show how social networking can help build language literacy, computer literacy and also, when used in academic context, help students freely share thoughts and ideas. On the other hand, it will also, by the support of relevant studies, show how internet can be a distraction for students due to its addicting quality and also show the effects of cyber bullying on students school performances. The literature review will acknowledge both sides of cyber socializing, and refer it to other studies. Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Networking on Students Performances Social Networking Sites are becoming a major part of almost every student’s life throughout the world. As technology enhances over time, so does the number of people signing up to Social Networking Sites (SNS), and thus it is debatable how a student’s life is affected by the increased use of SNS. This report will study works that are based on the advantages and disadvantages of SNS on the students’ academic performances. It will consider how social networking benefits students through language and computer literacy, communication and academic networking, while highlighting its downfall, like that of internet addiction and cyber-bullying (Childers, 2011; Dickson & Holley, 2010; Halverson, 2011; Jabr, 2011; Kraft & Wang, 2009; Kuss & Griffiths, 2011 & Mitchell, 2012).
