Whether these sites are for the greater good, or have a negative impact on our society. “A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on facilitating the building of social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections.” (“Social Networking”) Social networks are one of the most entertaining activities known to mankind, with over a billion accounts worldwide. While social networking websites offer a variety of ways for people to interact with each other, these websites can also exhibit major threats to the individuals that are using them. In order to understand social networking, it is important to understand the background and history. This demonstrates why people keep coming back to it, and it reveals the harm in social networking. The social network can be created using many different and unique sites, which use different types of social networking in the world today. The different types of social networks vary depending on what they are used for or the purpose behind them. One of the most popular is Facebook, a social networking service. It is a certain network that allows people to connect with family and friends through the Internet, and on phones as well. “Facebook is a site where someone can create a personal profile, add friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when updating their profiles”. (“Facebook”, 2005) Facebook was “launched in February 2004”, and was “owned and operated by Facebook, Inc” (“Facebook”, 2005). As of September 2012, Facebook has over one billion active users, more than half of whom use Facebook on a mobile device.
