Social networking sites have become a part of daily routine for most people with access to the internet. Websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube allow us instant access to current events and give us a glimpse into the lives of our friends list. If something serious is happening across the world there is a good chance we can open our social networking account to read about it and see pictures. While social networking sites can be a great communication tool they can be very damaging if used the wrong way. These sites can have serious negative effects on personal relationships as well as relationships in the political world.
Infidelity has become a serious issue since Facebook was created. It is very easy to connect with old friends and lovers when using Facebook. A website called FacebookCheating.com was created by a man whose ex-wife had an affair with a past friend she re-connected with on Facebook (Gershon, 2011). The website contains hundreds of stories related to infidelity and the damage Facebook has done to relationships and marriages. After reading about the negative aspects of Facebook it is hard to consider it as a positive part of our lives. For example, a man in Texas created two separate Facebook accounts using two different names. He was 35 years old and married with two children when he went on a business trip. While on the trip he met a much younger woman and gave her his fake name on Facebook so they could keep in touch. As a result, the man juggled two relationships for several years until it finally caught up with him (Gershon, 2011). Facebook is a valuable and fun website to use but it has too many negative effects on personal relationships.
Most people look to blame Facebook for the drama in their lives. However, Twitter has filled that role on occasion.
