Social mobility is the ability to move up or down the ladder of societal stratification. Social mobility in the United States can be affected by race, gender, education, family, etc. The United States is seen by many as the land of opportunity. Social mobility can be drastic in either direction in this country. Many times it is dependent on what kind of resources are available. But many times it has been shown that it does not matter who you are or where you come from the direction your life moves is mostly dependent on how willing you are to be successful. Upward vertical mobility in the United States is the most commonly reported one. This is where " living the American dream comes in". Many people move from other countries to do this. I have in laws that came from a very poor part of the world. They are a great example of upward vertical mobility. It is not an easy thing to do, to move to a strange place where you do not know anyone and you do not even know how to speak the language. The reason people do this so often is because America is seen as the land of opportunity. The other type of vertical motility is downward motility. This is when you start higher up and end up moving downward in society. This has been seen in this country throughout history. Some great examples are the great depression and even today's recession. So many people in this country today are struggling to find steady work. Many of these people are highly educated that come from very well off backgrounds. A lot of these people are taking jobs that might pay a quarter of their previous position. This is the reason why so many people in today's economy are losing their possessions through foreclosure or having to file for bankruptcy just to keep a vehicle or house to live in. No matter where you come from, rich or poor, it is hard to find an excuse not to be able to get
