Today, the meaning of communication has completely changed. It has become much easier to sustain a relationship through social media and the constant interaction that it provides. In contrast, social media can also prove to destroy relationships. Some people may get so caught up in virtual relationships that they have little to no regard for actual relationships. They may become so used to communicating via internet that they lose basic communication skills and can’t hold a face to face conversation.
Uranchimeg Batbayar Professor Lynda Nichol ESL 52A 5 September 2 Does the Internet Make You Dumber? In the article “ Does the Internet Make You Dumber?,” Nicholas Carr discusses the question of if the internet make you dumber or smarter. Even though many people think that the Internet allows us to get a lot of information and makes life easier, it makes people fall into bad habits. The net regularly interrupts of our lives, and it makes people intersperse, shallow, and inattentive thinkers. Also, the Internet affects our brains.
People need to be more careful when posting about things because no matter what, it will always be permanent online. Jung’s “ The Negative Effects of Social Media on Society and Individuals” points out many reasons on how social networking has its flaws. The reasoning of cyber-bullying, false sense of connection, and lack of privacy should be pointed out to the ones who don’t understand what the negative effects are online. People are blinded by the addictive quality of networking than really seeing the problems of
This is just a natural human action. Humans always want more things, and they are never satisfied. The warning signs of depression on a social media site are “social isolation, obsession, academic performance change, physical appearance/health decline, or significant mood change over a period of time” (Stenzel 111-112). The studies and figures show that social media sites cause depression which sometimes causes suicide. Suicide is becoming more and more frequent in teens in the world, and social media has a part in that growing number of
“likes” measures the about of new likers of a brand. b. Carmex: engagements are more important than likes because you can have people “like” pages with promotions without any knowledge of the product or true interest to ever purchase the products. A lot of ‘likes can provide inaccurate information due to the amount of individuals that simply click it without reading. 3 a. Engagement: Connecting to the Facebook audience by posting quality content daily that might attract consumers and gives them an opportunity to engage.
While there are positive outcomes of the internet, there still exist dangerous aspects to it, such as bullying. Most people may associate bullying with images of a teenager getting slammed into a locker, or getting their lunch money stolen. People may also think that it extends to name calling, teasing, and insults. Bullying has existed for a long time, with some adults thinking that it is a normal part of growing up, that teaches young adults to toughen up and have a thick skin, thinking this will help when they become adults. However, with the advancement in technology and its wide use, a new type of bullying has developed, cyberbullying, which is when a person uses technology and/or electronic devices to bully another person, typically by sending messages or posting comments of an intimidating or threatening nature.
I have notice that Facebook catalysis people’s search for attention. The little things like getting a comment or feedback becomes addictive, leading to more Attention Seeking (“OMG can’t believe what just happened!”). Status and what people say they’re up to doesn’t really reflect who they are or what’s really happening in their lives. It’s the most superficial skim of a person’s
However there are still many contemporary issues concerning consumers, in particular marketing and technology (if needed). Marketing is a way companies create interest in their product, and the internet has led to the growth of fraudulent behavior, most notably SPAM and the Pyramid Schemes. Marketing and advertising through misleading advertising, offering prizes and gifts, the use of bait advertising although illegal is a very large problem. Although the ACCC does prosecute false and misleading advertising eg ACCC vs Nissan motors, they have only limited resources and a lack of severe penalties and as a consequence many people continue to break the law. Similarly, technology has had a significant impact on how laws have had to be created and reformed in order to protect the rights of consumers.
In a sense, Pitts is showing concern for the future generations, and how they would live their lives. At the rate that technology and social media is affecting us now, how would people be able to physically communicate? Will society be undermined to a status of physical solitude, where one tweets the “exciting” life they are having to others that he or she cannot even recognize the faces of? In the horrifying context (the shooting itself and social media’s part in it) of the shooting of Justin Valdez, Pitts fully demonstrates the unintentional yet detrimental effects of social media on the general public, thus partially refuting a commonly believed idea that social media is designed to allow people to stay well connected to one
Jane Mukala Professor Hart ENG 101 March 18, 2015 Does The Internet Make You Dumber? Nicholas Carr argues that the internet has bad effects on the brain. He says that the internet makes it harder to remember anything, and that it is harder to move memories into long term memories. Carr thinks that by skimming information, it will diminish the ability to read long texts; I disagree with him because the internet makes actually makes us smarter and think accurate because we are aware of every little information around us. Carr thinks that excessive use of the internet might cause permanent changes to the way our brains work and we don’t have to remember as much, because we have RAM (Random Access Memory).
