Policy Development Draft on Social Media
According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, Social Media is any form of electronic communication in which users create an online community to share information, personal messages, ideas and any other content (video). The advancement of technology has made it necessary to use Social Media in every day aspects of society, law enforcement included. As the Policy Manager for a Law Enforcement organization I find it necessary to understand the importance of social media and the usefulness that it may have and a detriment it can pose within my department. This paper will discuss the best practices related to social media, why Law Enforcement Organizations should regulate an officers’ social media activity, and my departmental policy as a Policy Manager.
The International Association of Chiefs of Police National Law Enforcement Policy Center established a “Model Policy on Social Media.” The purpose of the policy was to establish the department’s position on the use of social media and provide guidance of the administration and oversight. The policy does not specifically address any one form of social media; however, all social media is inclusive as to include any form of social media that may be emerging. IACP National Law Enforcement Center understand the importance of Social Media as it can be beneficial as an investigational tool, aid in community outreach and assist with crime prevention. The center realizes that law enforcement have personal use for social media as well; however, do not want the personal use of social media to impede into the professional lives of law enforcement. The policy, “identifies potential uses that may be explored or expanded upon as deemed reasonable by administrative and supervisory personnel.” The policy provides prohibitions on the use of social media by department personnel.
