Social Influences and Behavior Tracie Boles PSY/300 February 11, 2013 Richard Alpert Abstract Social situations cause social behaviors in people. People are put in social situations everyday of their lives and they behave in certain ways. Individuals will behave as a group behaves, like with gun control because of a mass shooting, people became upset and angry and decided something had to be done about the ability to obtain certain guns and ammunition, in order to eliminate mass shootings. Another social situation is exercising as a group at a gym, where people behave the same way in order to prove to others they have what it takes to do the exercise and to get in better shape. Social Influences and Behavior People in society are affected by different social situations every day of their lives. People behave differently in different social settings. Social settings can be with family, friends, classmates, co-workers, politicians and the President together, and others. Often time’s catastrophic events change how people behave in social settings, such as how people and politicians reacted to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Exercising with a group changes people’s behavior because they will work harder during the workout than they would exercise on their own. Sometimes there are precursors and consequences for the behaviors that happened in these social settings. In Newtown, Connecticut, there was a mass killing of 26 people, mostly children by an armed gunman. The immediate reaction of the school officials and students was to get to safety, while the principal and a teacher tried to protect the children and ended up getting killed (CNN, 2012). The reactions after the shooting was over and the news spread around the Nation, people became angry and politicians, including the President, wants immediate gun control to help eliminate these types
