Social Deviance Experiment Deviance is a failure to conform to social norms, and social norms vary from culture to culture. It is as easy as straying, just a bit, from what is considered normal. In some regard, all people choose to be deviant in some way or another. Behaviors, after all, are only deemed deviant after someone has successfully labeled them so. I would like to believe that, like beauty, deviance is in the eye of the beholder. In chapter 13 of Think Sociology by Carl, deviance is described as taking four specific characteristics. One of which is that deviance is linked to time, this I particularly enjoy. The idea that deviance has an expiration date is both delightful and relatively infuriating. After all, just a mere 100 years ago a witch-hunt might have ignited on behalf of my pants wearing, long curly red hair flowing, herbal remedying, single female-ness. Fortunately for me I live in the 21st century and no longer have to fear a burning cross. One thing I do enjoy however, is singing. I come from a enormously musical background. I often find myself signing along to songs playing in the background of public places without even realizing it. That is of course, until I catch an awkward look by someone whom I have clearly made feel uncomfortable with my high note bellow to Celebration by Cool and the Gang. It was this exact situation that lead me to my social experiment of deviant behavior. I would take my head phones and sing loud and proud, in several public places, curious as to what I would receive. I must admit I was nervous at first, and very apprehensive of "letting it all out". However, this experiment turned into something that made me feel not only fantastic but interestingly enough, liberated. My first stop, Target in Rocklin.
