The Role of Effective Communication in Health and Social Care. Effective communication is important as communication is the art of conveying meaningful information and ideas. There are different methods of communication. The communication does not have to be verbal to be effective. As long as the medium of communication can be received and understood by the recipient, then the communication has been effective. Communication can often be described as interpersonal interaction. As there are many people and there can be a clash of personalities, causing friction within the group. Here is an example of Tuckman’s group theory; There is a hospital ward where there a group of new nurses have started work. In the beginning there were conflicts between the staff, while people are settling down in their roles on the ward. Once the conflicts have been resolved the ward can run more smoothly as people know their place and how the ward runs. Also the goal for the ward team have been discovered. Then the nurses started to trust and rely on each other for support. Trust has then been developed, so they are more focused on achieving the goal set. As if we do not clearly say how we are feeling it can lead to a misdiagnosis or not being properly treated. We also need to watch people’s body language as they can provide signals to how they are feeling if they do not wish to talk to us. Egan’s SOLER Theory can also help with communication as this can give us the basic tools to make patients feel more comfortable. When people feel comfortable they open up and can give us a better clue on the help and care we need to provide.
