Soap Operas on the Internet: Good idea or not? Kelly McCauley MM570 Marketing Research Course Project Professor Denigris February 24, 2013 Abstract For 5 decades, Soap Operas have been on TV to entertain the stay home moms and dads, college and high school students. But in the past 10 years, soaps ratings have been low due to change in the economic and social environment. Some soap operas were force to end their shows and a lot of viewers were upset that their shows were ending. There were talks that some of the shows were going to be put on the internet. So my research is to find out if the move to the internet would help save the soap operas shows. Justify the need for market research Define the marketing situation Soap Operas viewer’s description: Age: 14-60 Gender: Female and Male Race: All races Marital Status: Married, divorced, single Lifestyle: Stay-home moms and dads, working mothers and fathers, college students and high school students. Competitors- Talk shows, News, Cooking shows, etc… Soap Operas have been on TV for many decades and for the past 10 years, they haven’t been doing so well due to the change in the economic and social environment. What is the problem that will be researched? With lack of ratings on TV, will the switch to the internet help save Soap Operas shows? Define the research objective My hypothesis is to find out from soap viewers if it will make a difference if soaps are put on the internet. Also need to found out viewers’ lifestyle to give me a perspective of finding a solution to the problem. Identify data needs This research will be structured as a Qualitative research and I decided on to do a qualitative research because it will give me an insight of the viewer’s opinion about moving the soaps from TV to the internet.
