Because the alpine zone is present only on mountains, much of the landscape is rugged and broken, with rocky, snowcapped peaks, cliffs, and talus slopes, but also contains areas of gently rolling to almost flat topography (Biomes of the World). In all, the Alpine Biomes are gorgeous areas in spite of the harsh climates. The plants and animals here are well adapted for the
Scout says of the finished snowman, “It’s lovely, Jem, it looks almost like he’d talk to you.” (89) Earlier, Jem who called the snowman a Negro snowman is now calling it beautiful when it is covered with the white outside, the snow. Later, Atticus “squinted at the snowman a while. He grinned then laughed.” (90) Atticus, appreciated Jem and Scout’s work on the snowman, he didn’t care whether it was black or white because he wasn’t racist. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the snowman is an important symbol discussed. First while constructing the snowman Jem and Scout put dirt in the middle to make up for the lack of snow.
| Melting Away | By: Deondre Floyd-Bamberg | | I found this project a little exciting due to the models I had been able to build. The purpose of this project is to test what household objects combined can insulate the cold air from an ice cube and prevents it from melting and sustain the freezing point of the ice. I used aluminum foil, paper, and cardboard for the materials materials for the ice boxes. I also added two substances which were salt, and sugar. The salt in this experiment forces its way into the ice cube, therefore bonding with small particles of the ice molecules to raise the freezing point.
Due to the fact that Boreal forest have acidic soil because of fallen conifer needles that accumulate on the forest floor, the amount of plants that can grow are limited. Taiga forests are dominated by Fir, Pin and Spruce that have needles instead of leaves. Adaptation over the years has caused these plants to grow needles because they conserve energy by not having to re-grow leaves every spring and sheds snow easily. Animals that call the Boreal Forest their home have also adapted to the harsh climate as the plants have. Moose, Red Deer, Elk and Lynx are all natives to the forest and their capability to adapt has allowed them to survive.
The pine beetles actually play a large role in the pine forest ecosystem. They help keep the forest strong by removing the weak trees, and allow room for the new pine trees to rise.
When salt is applied to ice, it lowers the ice’s melting point. This means that even if the temperature is still very low, the ice can still melt. Salt melts ice because it lowers the freezing point of water around the ice. The ice melts and is unable to refreeze except at a much lower temperature. Melting point is an important concept to understand in this experiment.
The hemlock woolly adelgid is in the same species and is very similar to the balsam, and does exactly the same things only on hemlock trees. So, BWA is free from natural enemies that keep the pest under control in its native range. Three adaptations the balsam woolly adelgid has acquired by living in Minnesota is that it can live in cold and humid temperatures because it had a waxy wool-like material to cover its body, it’s very small so it doesn’t have any predators, and there are so many of them it’s hard to kill them all. It also is a threat to Minnesota ecosystems because in some localities, firs are slowly being eliminated from the ecosystem; and adelgid populations continue to spread to previously uninfested areas. It caused the gaunting of branch nodes and the terminal growth of
Ethical Issues in the Design of Ultra-Lightweight Vehicles DutchEVO In the period 1998 to 2004 a lightweight car was designed and to save weight, the floor in the car was raised for side impact protection, allowing for a lightweight door construction. Because of the high floor a venturi was formed under it, causing down force and compensating for the relatively high point of inertia. Biologically degradable materials are used for the hood and other non-carrying body panels. The door panels are made out of a single sheet of poly carbonate. Five ethical issues in the operationalization of sustainability were identified.
They could be amusing and edifying at the same time.". One of the benefits for skiers is that the Hankin Evelyn reserve is off limits to snowmobilers, unlike some backcountry areas. Ministry of Forests, who worked on the project. "When you have fruit or berries and you sprinkle sugar on top to accentuate the flavors, you can see how every little bit helps," said Ann Powell, a biochemist at the University of California, Davis. Our sensitivity to sweetness makes a gene for sugar production extra important.
Plant fibres are known for having great tensile strength and therefore cannot be easily broken by pulling. This, along with their flexibility, makes them very useful. They usually occur in bundles of fibres which are much stronger than the individual cells. Paper is usually made from fibres from wood however wood fibres are not easily extracted because the matrix around the cellulose fibres contains a lot of lignin. As a result, wood is soaked in very strong alkalis such as caustic soda to produce a pulp consisting of cellulose and lignified cellulose fibres in water.
