Dogma: Small Group Communication Analysis Introduction: Dogma (1999) is a satire of the Catholic Church and Catholic belief system. The storyline follows Loki and Bartleby, two angels who were expelled from Heaven by God. After receiving a newspaper article from an anonymous sender, they are reminded of a loophole in Catholic Dogma that will allow them to get back into Heaven. However, this creates the paradox that existence is founded on the principle that God is infallible, and if Bartleby and Loki achieve their goal of returning to Heaven, they would prove God wrong, thus negating existence. As the film proceeds, a small group of individuals emerges to prevent Loki and Bartleby from successfully having their sins forgiven and returning to Heaven. PART 1: Group Background (Plot and Character Development): The film begins with an old man looking out at the ocean from a New Jersey boardwalk. He is attacked and beaten into a coma by a set of three teenagers wielding hockey sticks. From here, the film shifts to Cardinal Glick who is holding a press conference in front of his Catholic Church in New Jersey as it is preparing to celebrate its centennial anniversary. Cardinal Glick is announcing that through Papal decree, the Church will be celebrating this centennial anniversary with Plenary Indulgence. The story then shifts to an airport in Wisconsin, where Bartleby and Loki are introduced. They are two fallen angels who were banished from Heaven and exiled to Wisconsin by God after Bartleby, a Grigori watcher angel, convinced Loki, the Angel of Death, to throw down his sword and quit his duties. While sitting in the airport, Bartleby shows a newspaper article to Loki that was anonymously sent to him.
