Small Company Uses HR as a Strategic Tool for Growth Gratterpalm is a small award winning independent retail marketing agency. It has major clients in various parts of the world such as the United Kingdom. It is a marketing agency that creates advertising, point of sale and design for its clients. Gratterpalm had absolutely no HR function within the company as of January 2003. HR was something that needed to be introduced to the company in order to help it to continue to grow and prosper. The HR manager joined Gratterpalm in 2003 and immediately began to introduce HR with a performance review tool that would allow them to benchmark the success of a people-centered culture and would also allow employee the chance to have their opinions heard. The “Gratter chatter”, which was an employee survey, was put into affect right away. This survey would highlight the key issues that needed to be addressed and give the employees to voice their opinions on things they thought should be changed or handled differently. Another big development that HR introduced to the company was a structured appraisal procedure, “Lets Talk.” This was a way for employees to gain some feedback on their performances as well as give them some objectives to be accomplished for the forthcoming year. The HR team also implemented a clear career structure that would show each of the employees what they would need to accomplish and complete in order to advance to the next level. There are many ways in which HR can benefit any company. Within just 5 years, Gratterpalm was seeing significant results from all the new ideas HR introduced. The employee turnover reduced from 30 percent to 15 percent. The employee survey had its response rates increase from 70 percent to 100 percent. Attendance rates also increased.
