SM Entertainment: Empowering Innovation of the ‘Korean’ Culture 1. Introduction The success of Korean economy was, for decades, laid at the door of the big “Chaebol” or family firms. While conglomerates such as Samsung and Hyundai still form the backbone of the country’s financial structure, many people now believe that the Korean national brand itself is changing to reflect this new passion for Korean Wave, or “Hallyu.” For people under a certain age, all across Asia – and increasingly in Europe and the US too – the Korea of today is just as likely to be associated with pop music or TV dramas as with cars or microchips. Naturally, this brings a huge economic benefit to Korea and adds value to Korean products. Therefore, Korean entertainment market is no longer a mere ‘entertainment’ but something far greater than that. In our research, we studied in depth of SM Entertainment, the first proper Korean entertainment company which planted the seed of Hallyu craze. We identified the general overview of Korean pop culture, the organization and structure of SM Entertainment before and after establishment of SM Entertainment, its key success factors, weakness and opportunity, and its contribution to Hallyu. 2.
