The movie begins with a shocking scene of Jamal in prison being tortured by men that wanted to find out how he knew all the answers to the questions he was asked in a local gameshow where he had won a substacial amount already, either if it was by cheating (because they suspected someone had been telling him the answers), just pure luck or destiny had this experience in store for him. The movie then flashes back to earlier questions in the gameshow and this flashback ends shortly after Jamal has won 20 million Rupees. " The story timeline begins depicting how two Muslim childrenʼs, Jamal and Salim, hard lives were and all the hardships they had to go through in order to survive. We see how they became orphans when they were small after a mob attack on Muslims and how they had to survive alone in the Mumbai slums a life full of poverty and endure humiliation, degradation and discrimination. " However, even though both of the children went through the same experiences in life, each one took a different path in life.
Terry’s transformation throughout the film is stemmed from his moral awakening due to the betrayal he feels from Johnny Friendly and his “henchmen”. Initially, he is determined to disregard his conscience yet as a result of the guilt & restlessness he feels in regards to his role in Joey’s murder, his conscience becomes distinguished. His guilt over the murder is juxtaposed against the carelessness of the mobsters who joke that Joey could “sing but he couldn’t fly”, it is here that the Kazan separates Terry from the mob as he conveys him as a vulnerable & sensitive character as his conscience begins to overpower his ‘tough guy’ act. Kazan’s use of mist and fog relentlessly suppressing Terry Mallow highlights the ambiguity in Terry’s conscience, which reflects he is only just beginning to initiate recognition to his morals

Each of these men is an outsider who doesn't seem to fit in very well with family or community. Additionally, they both harbor racial hatred and pursue morally questionable resolutions through violent action. Each man is also on a mission to rescue a girl from a circumstance defined, at least in the mind of the main character, as evil. The reality of evil however is relative, based on prejudice and point of view.
However, the two most important instances were when he did not help Hassan during the rape and when he framed Hassan for stealing the watch and money. When Amir returns to Pakistan, Rahim Khan encourages Amir to find Sohrab from a war torn orphanage and says “there is a way to be good again.” Amir believes he can be redeemed if he can complete this task since Sohrab's parents were executed.
