It is set in Mumbai, India, where 18 year old Jamal Malik is a contestant on the Indian version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?'. Jamal is one question away from winning the top prize of the show, but Prem the host (Anil Kapoor) can’t understand how an uneducated young boy from a slum knows the answers to the difficult questions in the show, so he has Jamal arrested and interrogated after being convinced that he’s cheating. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal (Dev Patel) tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother Salim (Madhur Mittal) grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Freida Pinto), the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's often difficult questions. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector (Irrfan Khan) and millions of viewers are about to find out. In the film, Jamal and Salim choose two very different paths in their life. These paths lead to two opposing outcomes. Jamal ends up becoming a millionnaire, while Salim dies at the hands of his gangster boss’ employees.
