ABSTRACT This project is a take-home primary diagnostic device for patients who potentially suffer from sleep apnea. It provides a cost-effective and accurate breathing recording system for sleep apnea patients who have trouble sleeping comfortably at a sleep lab and who are placed in long wait lists before they can visit a sleep clinic. It also provides an easy to use software diagnostic tool for doctors to analyze recorded data for accurate diagnosis of the patient. Sensing devices will detect the airflow patterns of the patient, including intensity and timing. The device is compatible with two airflow sensors, both of which are already widely popular in the market and can easily be worn and fixated by the patient. The sensors output measurement signals which are then amplified and filtered before being sent to the microcontroller. The resulting data is stored to a data flash card. The patient will take this device home and wear it before falling asleep. He/she will then bring in the device to a lab clinic and his/her breathing pattern will be read from the memory card and displayed on a computer via a serial cable for analysis and diagnosis. The software implementation is done in LabVIEW. A graphical user interface, along with software tools, helps the doctor or technician diagnose the patient.
