Slavery can be defined as “A person who is the property of and wholly subject to another; a bond servant.” (Dictionary) Slavery had been the primary existence for the African people throughout the 16th to 19th century. It was estimated that 8 to 15 million Africans had been enslaved and sent to America during these 3 centuries. (Dowling, Mike) Throughout this time Africa as a continent and its people suffered significantly. The continent suffered a loss of its culture and population, while its people suffered from enslavement and abuse. This essay will aim to look at the negative impact the slavery system brought upon Africa as a continent and its people as they fell victims to slavery. The act of slavery has had a negative effect on the civilization and culture of Africa. One of the biggest problems Africa as a continent suffered from due to the slave system was the loss of its people. From the estimated 8 to 15 million African People taken to America during the slave period, the population of Africa decreased significantly just alone from the enslavement. (Dowling, Mike) The remaining population often fled cities to avoid being captured. This enormous loss of population had very consequential effects on Africa as it decreased the trading with other countries and stopped the economic development of the continent. This lead to limited development and modernization of its countries and cities a problem, which can still be seen today in Africa. During this time the culture of Africa also suffered. With less people around, European countries easily colonized certain parts of Africa. An example of colonization in Africa can be seen with the country Ivory Coast otherwise known as Côte d’Ivoire.
