Slave Laws in Virginia (1661, 1691, and1705) 1661-If an indentured servant or slave ran away and was caught they would have to make up the time spent searching for them and the lost labor. This Punishment meant double the initial service time. If the slave ran away during the harvest season the court extended service equivalent to the damage the master sustained. As soon as the servant or slave returned the master carried him to the commissioner to show prove of absence, the court then decides how much time he will serve for his absence. If an English servant ran away with a black slave who could not make up the additional time added to their service, the English man would have to make time up to his own master and the black slave’s master. If an English woman that’s free and it not married has a baby with a black or mulatto she must pay fifteen pounds one month after the child is born. If she fails to fulfill this obligation she shall be taken by church wardens and discarded for five years. The fifteen pounds will then be paid one-third paid to government, one-third to parish where misdeed was committed and one-third to informant. The bastard child will be sold into slavery until the age of thirty. If the English women with the bastard child is a servant she will be sold by church wardens, and the child will become a slave. No black or mulatto can be set free by anyone unless the person, their beneficiary or an administrator pays for their transportation out of the country within six months after they were set free.
