The British slave trade was eventually abolished in 1807 (although illegal slave trading would continue for decades after that) after years of debate, in which supporters of the trade claimed that it was not inhumane, that they were acting in the slaves’ benefit, etc. The rationalizations and defenses given for slavery and the slave trade were absurd and self-serving. Reparation Reparation for slavery is a proposal that there should be some type of compensation provided to the descendants of enslaved people in the United States. This is in consideration of the uncompensated labor their ancestors had to perform over the centuries. This proposal has been proposed in many different forms in ways relating to independence. This idea is still a highly controversy and there is idea of how it can be implemented. Some countries would like this reparation due to their loss of population as well.
King Phillip’s war- war between Indian and English supporters of metacom and the colonists that killed 5% of colonists and twice as many Indians, including Metacom. The Indian population was decreased by 40% in southern England and eliminated resistance to white expansion 13. Indentured servants- people who come to America and work as a slave for an agreed upon number of years in return for freedom or property. They shaped the Chesapeake society until diseases killed them off 14. Virginia House of Burgesses and royal governor’s council- two chambers of legislature created in the 1650’s.
These two places helped a slave escape a federal marshal so he couldn’t return the slave back to the South. Upon doing so, thirty some people were in violation of the Fugitive Slave Law and only two were convicted and serve
Slavery: “The Peculiar Institution” Slaves were brought to the colonies first as indentured servants then slave traders started capturing slaves from Africa and bring them to the Caribbean. The colonist found slave labor cheap compared to indentured slaves who eventually ended their service. Slavery began in the United States about the 1630’s. During this time the colonial courts and legislatures made Africans property and enslaved to their masters for a life time. The legislature also ruled that slave status would be inherited by their children.

The movie was based on the times of the early 1900’s and African American’s were not accepted in society as equals as they are today. African American women were often sold off into marriage at very young ages. Many times the men who took these young girls were much older and had homes, land, and young children that needed to be cared for. These young girls became caregivers as well as maids and forced into a life much like slavery.

The U.S. government’s original plan to repay African Americans for slavery was “40 acres and a mule”. To show faith from the government, General Sherman set aside land on the coast of South Carolina and Georgia for freedmen to settle. But, in 1865, after the Confederates States of America were defeated, and the death of Lincoln; President Andrew Johnson returned the land back to its previous owners. The effects of slavery hurt African Americans in many aspects of life due to the unresolved question on reparations.
