The topic of my paper is Single Mothers in the African American community and the psychological turmoil that brings (depression, anxiety , and anger) . I will also be cross-referencing other ethnicities to compare my findings. Lastly, I will be exploring the impact this all has on the community as a whole as well as contributions that can be made to extinguish this epidemic. I. Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Research There are three different designs of research. There is Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods. Qualitative is exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to social or human problems. This involves emerging questions and procedures. With Qualitative there are a list of goals to be met such as: data typically collected in participants setting, data builds from particulars to general themes, make interpretation of the meaning, final report has a flexible structure, focus on individual meaning, focus on importance of rendering the complexity of a situation. With Quantitative testing objective theories by examining relationship between variables. Variables can be measured, typically on instruments (ex: questionnaire) so that numbered data can be analyzed using statistical procedures. Final report has a set structure (introduction, literature, theory, methods, results, discussion). Researchers have assumptions about testing theories deductively. Researcher builds in protections against bias, controlling for alternative explanations. And lastly the findings are generalized and replicated. With the final design, Mixed Method you will see a combination or associations between both qualitative and quantitative methods. This is also where you will find philosophical assumptions. Researchers will then collect and analyze both kinds of data so that overall the strength of the study is greater than either alone. The reason I am
