Singapore’s Culture Christopher Kuhns ANT 101 Instructor Tristan Marble September 12, 2011 “Singapore, city-state located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) north of the Equator” (Singapore, 2011). Singapore is culturally one of the most diverse countries in the world. They come from all over the world and they are known as foragers. The elders of Singapore have interacted with different races for generations. There are about five million people in Singapore. There is a mixture of Chinese, Europeans, Indians, and Malay in Singapore that call themselves Singaporeans and they belong to different cultural backgrounds that are known for their peace loving nature. Each of the races in Singapore celebrates their own beliefs, values and religion. They also speak up to four different languages English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil in their country. Singapore is among the twenty smallest countries in the world. These are some of the interesting facts about Singapore. In this paper I am going to examine the Singaporeans history, kinships, political organization and economic organization. “In 1819, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, an official of a British trading company called the British East India Company, arrived to set up a trading post in the south of the Malay Peninsula. The Dutch controlled the trade routes with China and the East Indies, and Raffles wanted to establish a British trading base to end Dutch control. Raffles and his assistant, William Farquhar, anchored off Singapore on Jan. 28, 1819, and went ashore the next day. Raffles received permission to establish a trading post for the United Kingdom through an agreement with Temenggong Abdul Rahman, the local chief of Singapore, and Sultan
