The idea of “sin tax” is not new it used for commodities such as alcohol and tobacco in the past. The sin tax needs to be extended to include junk food because the bill would promote a healthier lifestyles, fights major epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and can raise revenue to fund healthcare reform. These are some of the reasons the government has decided to target junk food. If a sin tax is put in place it would help promote a healthier lifestyle by lowering the cost of healthy food, and making healthy lifestyle more attainable. The United States leads the world in obesity and heart disease across all age, income and cultural backgrounds. Depending on the sources used the healthcare reform bill (Affordable Healthcare Act) cost between 1 and 1.5 trillion dollars, the sin tax would help offset that cost. The sin tax could eventually be the push that the Americans need to promote healthier lifestyles on a daily basis. The sin tax bill including junk food in its mist would make it more attainable for others to spend their money on more valuable products such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Even though many have argued that the sin tax is there to fall disproportionately on the poor there are other benefits that are of interest for them. The sin tax has been said to predominantly increase more of a positive behavior within low-income communities because they are the ones to have associated themselves with many junk food products. Overtime with the help of sin tax many low income communities will actually benefit from this bill. It addresses the major factors of everyone’s overall health by nutritionally improving public health, raising revenue which could be used for current structures, and obstructing the overuse of our healthcare systems for chronic diseases such as heart risk or obesity.
