Simple Stimulus Learning This paper analyzes the forms of simple stimulus learning. It will explain and discuss the concept of habituation, the components that influence perceptual learning, and the effects of stimulus exposure. Also, the applications of simple stimulus learning in real life situations it will be discussed. “Stimulus learning is a relatively permanent change in behavior, or behavior repertoire which occurs as a result of experience (Terry, 2006).” A stimulus can be simple or complex and defines something that is coming through the subject’s senses. In psychology, the simple stimulus could be a light, a sound, a smell, etc. The stimulus can be a part of the learning process, and it is named in this case stimulus learning. The stimulus learning has an influence on the subject’s behavior during the learning process. Simple stimulus learning can be applied to a real life situation, and it is involved in simple forms of learning such as habituation or conditioning. Habituation is a simple form of learning (non-associative) that occurs in the subject’s brain, after the individual is exposed repetitively to a specific stimulus. The subject’s responsiveness will decrease and the organism will ignore that specific stimulus. The habituation is a learning process that declines the conditioned response (CR) after a repetitive exposure to a conditioned stimulus (CS). This process shows a reduction of neuronal response in the brain when the stimulus is repeated. The subject will adapt to the frequency, expectancy, and strength of the stimulus, avoiding adverse reactions and behaviors of the subject. The organism learns how to distinguish and discriminate the CS among other similar stimulus. The more it is exposed to the CS, the more favorable will be the response; the subject will be familiarized with the CS, and the organism will disregard the stimulus.
