Silent Spring In the novel “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson, she discusses the problem of insecticides and how it is effecting our environment. Carson talks about how using the insecticide is dangerous and can cause many different effects not only to our environment but to people. In 1930 there was a disease that was introduced to the United States called the Dutch Elm Disease. It was introduced to the United States by Europe. The Dutch Elm Disease, is known to spread across trees, mainly the Elm Tree. The Elm Disease would take over the tree and spread by the fungus that was upon it. On these trees, little bark beetles would carry this disease. When the government found out about this, they decided that their best option would be to kill the beetles so they would not spread this disease. They started to spray the trees with pesticides. The spraying of the insecticides, such as DDT, caused a cycle of destruction that eventually would repeat itself over a various amount of time. The government started to spray the insecticides where they had the highest population of elm trees, which was Michigan. On Michigan State Campus, their were aviary scientists who have observed an abnormaility as soon as they started to use the spray. They realized a decrease in the number of robins. Both scientists started researching for a solution to the problem. The pattern of dead robins continued each Spring, because the Elm trees were sprayed during the spring. Since the robins have migrated, they came back to their nesting home after the trees were sprayed. The scientist quickly discovered that they died from poisoning of the insecticides. Most of the birds experienced a loss of balance, convulsions, tremors, and death. The scientists decided to dig a little deeper and found out that the birds ate worms, which were infected by the poison. A scientist in Illinois
