Silas Marner’s consistent faith “Love Once, Love Always” For this report I decided to read the book Silas Marner written by George Eliot. I will first give a general overview on what is told in this book, after which I will discuss the ethical aspects of this book, which then leads to the ethical argument George Eliot tries to address in this book. I will wrap up this paper by making a comparison of this book to the film version of this book (directed by Giles Foster, starring Ben Kingsley), and by giving a short summary of this paper. Silas Marner is the protagonist of this book. The first scenes take place in Northern England (Lantern Yard to be exact), in the 19th century. Silas is being accused of stealing money from the municipality because they (prosecutors) found his pocket knife at the place where the money was, and also the sac in which the money was placed in. Silas is astonished by these charges, and says his friend William Dane burrowed his pocket knife shortly before the money was stolen. The verdict was that Silas is guilty and it looks as like William Dane has framed Silas. Sarah subsequently breaks her engagement with Silas. Silas decides to leave Lantern Yard, and sets foot in a village called Raveloe. In Raveloe, Silas lives a lonely life as a weaver, and the only pleasure he gets is from the gold he receives from weaving. He has a secret place to keep his gold. One day, Dunstan Cass (the son of Raveloe’s biggest landowner), has to sell a horse to pay back his debt to his brother (Godfrey). While riding the horse, the horse falls exactly on a rod and the horse dies. Not knowing how to repay his brother, he decides to go to Silas’s cottage and searches for his hidden gold. After he found it, he robs Silas from his gold. Silas finds out he has been robbed, and goes to the village inn to find the officer. Everyone can sympathize with him, and
