Siddhartha Gautama An Indian Prince whom achieved enlightenment, Siddhartha Gautama “Buddha”, nearly 80, had passed to complete Nirvana outside Vaisali in a grove of sal trees. Buddha was born in 239 B.C.E., in Lumbini Park, near Kapilavastu, India to King Suddhodana and Lady Maya Diva Gautama, rulers of the Sakya tribe but was raised by his aunt Lady Japiti. Buddha’s childhood was carefree and filled with luxury and ease. Although he had no siblings he had many friends and cousins that he played with among the palace buildings and garden walls. All loved him. He was guarded from seeing anyone that suffered from any kind of ailment and had three palaces for each season, cold, rainy, and hot. As a young man he could be found sitting cross-legged in meditation. His education began at the age of eight by the guru Viswamitra. He amazed his new guru by demonstrating that he knew all without even cracking a book. Whether it was sacred verses or science Buddha was omniscient. Viswamitra bowed to Prince Siddhartha and worshiped him. When Prince Siddhartha was sixteen nearly five hundred of Sakyas fairest women were brought to him so he could choose one for his wife. It was then that he met the maiden Gopa Yasodhara and new immediately she was to be his bride. But other men had asked for her hand in marriage and Buddha had to compete for her. He contested against three childhood friends, Devadatta, Ardjuna, and Nanda, in archery and horsemanship. He proved to be better than the other three men and it was decided that he would marry the young and beautiful Gopa Yasodgara. Together they had a son and named him Rahula, which means bond. At the age of 29 Buddha gave up his luxurious life and left home in search of Nirvana. He spent several years studying with numerous gurus in search of the highest state of consciousness.
