To those that experienced normal development, child incest might be an unpleasant theoretical concept or a disturbing news story that is soon forgotten. To the many women that experience and somehow survive its horrific challenges, child incest is responsible for the murder of the person she might have become. This paper will review existing literature on childhood sexual abuse and consider the following questions: 1. What are the long-term implications of childhood sexual abuse? 2.
Substance abuse can have devastating effects on both the mother and her unborn child (Effects of drug abuse on pregnant women). Currently there are no states that hold prenatal substance abuse as a criminal act of child abuse and neglect, but many have expanded their civil child warfare requirement to include substance abuse during pregnancy as grounds for terminating parental rights in neglect (American Pregnancy). Alabama is cracking down on substance abuse during pregnancy. Legislatures in Alabama have prosecuted women who expose their children to drugs while pregnant. The
Zack Williams English III 3rd Period Why Pregnant Women Shouldn’t Smoke Arsenic, formaldehyde, tar. Should babies be exposed to these harmful chemicals while in the womb? Well if the mother is a smoker then the baby will. Women who smoke while pregnant can cause adverse and permanent health issues to themselves and their baby. How does a pregnant mother who smokes effect the baby?
Prison is a very stressful environment. That’s the type of place that a pregnant person should avoid. Instead of prosecuting the women and trying to place her in jail why not place her into a drug treatment facility where they specialize in the treatment and detoxification of pregnant women. A place where they can be safe and the baby in the womb and her can get the special treatment where they have a higher chance of surviving. A lot of times we place the sole blame on the pregnant woman who takes these drugs but what about the people who supply them with
Women Right to Choose Who’s right is it to choose whether or not a child is aborted? It is the woman’s body, but the child is both the man and woman’s offspring. The issue of woman’s right is one thing that should be considered. In the event that the mother was raped, if she is (for example) a 10 yr. old child or if by having the baby it would put the mother’s life in danger, then there is something that needs to be done. Forcing a woman to carry the child of a rapist simply because one believes that abortion is wrong would be infringing in on the rights of the mother.
The mother could be physically, mentally, or emotionally unwell and not capable of being pregnant or having a child without endangering her health; the pregnancy could have possibly been the result of a terrible crime, such as rape or incest; the fetus could be unhealthy and be a danger to the mother's health. I truly believe that abortion is a good thing if used right. Many people are not ready to have another human in their life and raise it improperly. In 1987 a study was done to the woman who had abortions, to find out the
Illicit use of these drugs can lead to low birth weight, breathing difficulties, death, and of course the possibility of the baby being born addicted to the drug. Drug addictions in infants present themselves as irritability, fevers, and piercing cries. More specifically, cocaine use during pregnancy can cause physical deformities in the child’s eyes, bones, genitals, urinary tract, kidneys and heart and acute growth retardation. They may also experience seizures and hemorrhages. While many people believe that marijuana may not be as harmful as these other drugs, it can still affect the infant in a few ways.
Atwood presents the female characters as being both oppressed and dehumanised through how their freedom being stripped from them. An example of this is how they are no longer allowed to smoke cigarettes due to the potential harm it can cause their pregnancy. Woman are protected in Gilead however this also means that they must submit to the state-sanctioned rape by their specific commanders. In chapter five Aunt Lydia states that “There is more than one kind of freedom… Freedom to and freedom from.” The freedom to that she is referring to is the ability to make a decision, an example of this is evident through how Offred is given a chance to escape by the doctor, however she immediately questions herself by thinking “why am I frightened?” This implies that she is so accustomed to being oppressed she is almost scared to take the chance of freedom that is being handed to her. This portrays a sense of dehumanisation in terms of female characters as freedom is regarded as a basic human right.
The Effects of Maternal Substance Abuse on Children Before and After Birth Abstract Maternal substance abuse is a major problem in today’s society and can cause severe damage to children before and after birth. This paper examines the effects that maternal substance abuse has on children before and after birth. The most common substances abused by pregnant women are alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs such as marijuana and cocaine. Studies show that 27% of women abuse one of these substances while being pregnant. Each substance can cause severe and permanent damage to children before and even after birth.
The first one is known as therapeutic abortion, in this type it is performed when there is life threatening or significant risk to the patient health. The second type is known as elective abortion. This is carried out as personal matter of choice, or simply its women choice to terminate their pregnancy without health problem as the cause. The last one is an abortion in which the fetus is expelled from woman’s body as a result of accident, injury or natural causes (What abortion?, n.d.). Focusing in Thailand this subject has been a major cause to generate controversy as women argue for their productive right, this subject has all so passing the Fourth World Conference on Women, in which the Asian have moved in to the forefront.
