Alexandra Hazell Supplements: Friend or Foe? Everybody knows that it is essential for humans to have micronutrients, or in other, more recognizable, words, vitamins and minerals, in every stage of their life to maintain health. Micronutrients can be consumed through the food that we eat, but some may be placed in miniature drops and capsules called dietary supplements. There are two kinds of dietary supplements; nutritional, (vitamins and minerals) and botanical, which are herbal types. In this day and age, it's easy to get access to over the counter supplements; they're used universally. Many people believe that supplements will last them with all the nutrition they need, and depend on them over a daily basis. But they don't stop and think about what the effects of doing so are. It is uncertain whether a vitamin supplement may or may not provide just as much nutrition as actual foods, but there are many disadvantages when taking vitamin supplements, and advantages when eating fruits and vegetables, and it is high time that you learn them. But before I begin, I should explain the importance and function of vitamins and minerals in your body. Vitamins and minerals are crucial when it comes to the body carrying out all it's functions. They also keep you looking and feeling healthy. A deficiency of vitamins and minerals in your body will cause you to be disease prone. Different kinds of micronutrients help with different tasks the body needs to complete in order to survive. For instance, Vitamin A helps with growth and repair. Healthy skin and hair are a product of Vitamin A. Vitamin A also cures night blindness and is needed for the formation of certain hormones. Like I stated earlier, vitamins and minerals can be directly consumed in foods or in supplements. I recommend actual foods in contrast with supplements and here's why: Cost is a leading factor
